Dabangg, the 2010 Hindi action film directed by Abhinav Kashyap and produced by Arbaaz Khan, features Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha (daughter of Shatrughan Sinha) in lead roles. It is the debut film of Sonakshi Sinha as an actress, for Arbaaz Khan as a producer and for Abhinav Kashyap (brother of director Anurag Kashyap) as a director. The movie Dabangg also features Om Puri, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher, Mahesh Manjrekar, Arbaaz Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Mahie Gill, Malaika Arora (item number) and Sonu Sood (main antagonist) in supporting roles.
Dabangg was released on 10 September 2010, and the film broke many records at the box office within the first week of its release. The film set the records of the highest opening day grosser and the highest weekend grosser of all time at the Indian box office, breaking records set earlier held by 3 Idiots. It is now the third highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time and the highest-grossing film of 2010.
Sonakshi Sinha went on a special diet and trained for two years in order to get into shape for her role of a village girl, reports said. The film was mostly shot in Maharashtra and a song and some other portions were shot in UAE.
The film Dabangg received mostly positive reviews from critics and was welcomed by audiences in packed cinema halls. Dabangg also received positive response in the overseas markets such as USA, UAE, UK, Australia, Mauritius, South Africa, Fiji, and some other territories of Europe, Asia and Africa.
The film was produced at a budget of Rupees 42 crore (US$ 9.11 million) and it could collect a gross revenue of Indian rupees 104 crore (US$ 22.57 million) as the initial 10-day collections. Producer Arbaaz Khan and elder brother Salman Khan are on cloud nine as the film did exceptionally well at the box office and they plan a sequel, Dabangg 2, about which Arbaaz Khan said, "Yes, there's a 110% possibility that we will start Dabangg 2, but when that will happen is yet undecided. See, Salman has several commitments to fulfill, so Dabangg 2 will take some time to start. But it's definitely on the cards."
